Hibiscus Coast ‘cycling coast’ Cycling routes throughout the Hibiscus Coast could be linked to make the area a ‘‘cycling mecca’’. So says Albany ward councillor John Watson after Auckland Transport released a list of the top 10 most scenic bike rides. It includes Orewa Estuary’s Te Ara Tahuna Cycleway and Walkway, which he says is an outstanding success, with heavy patronage from locals and visitors. Watson believes the opportunity exists to make other parts of the Hibiscus Coast a destination for recreational cyclists too. ‘‘There are other really good cyc- ling routes here that people aren’t so familiar with and have the potential to be connected up at some stage.’’ Gulf Harbour’s cycle/walkway from Pinecrest Drive provides stunning views over Okoromai Bay and the nearby Shakespear Regional Park, Watson says. ‘‘There is a direct pathway to the regional park and through the surrounding wetlands.’’ Watson says Gulf Harbour has a good network of paths along streams and through parks that can easily be used as a scenic cycleway.Aride out to the Hammerhead affords stunning views down the Hauraki Gulf to Auckland city, while the opposite side of the canal has a track that goes around the Hobbs Bay boat harbour and links back up with Pinecrest Drive, he says. Routes include shops and cafes and scenery stops. Watson says the former Rodney District Council had considered a Whangaparaoa Peninsula cycleway/ walkway via the Weiti River. ‘‘On the Hibiscus Coast we have coastlines the equal of any and the potential to turn this area into something of a cycling mecca for people of all ages.’’ Chicken Thigh Fillets Boneless, Skinless 1199 kg Wilcox Perlas Potatoes 1.5kg 699 ea Fresh’n Fruity/ AnchorUNO/ Calci Yum 6 Pack 379 ea Limited to 6 assorted Church Road Range 750ml (Excludes McDonald Series/Grand Reserve/Pinot Noir/Syrah) Thismicrolight aims to fly the two New Zealand flag options over the Hibiscus Coast on Sunday and Monday. Pilot Derek Holmes will also fly the CrestClean Amphibious Microlight above the Waitemata Harbour on Monday It is the only one in New Zealand and displays the country’s two flag options on either side of the aircraft’s wing – the current New Zealand flag and the contender flag. ‘‘It is a historic time for New Zea- land and it is important to recognise that,’’ Holmes says. ‘‘Canada went through it almost 50 years ago. It will give people a vis- ual of both flags and it will create a talking point.’’ He bought the aircraft in Florida two years ago, drove it across to California then shipped it to New Zealand. ‘‘It can take off on water, grass runways and at airports.’’ With a four-stroke motor, the microlight can travel at a speed of 80kmh. ‘‘I love it – the freedom, the spec- tacular scenery and the adventure of being in the air is amazing,’’ Holmes says. ‘‘You can pack it up and travel to where ever you want to go flying.’’ Introductory flights are available this weekend for those keen to learn to fly the microlight. 1399 ea Limited to 48 assorted Lamb Leg Roast Bone In 1199 kg Anchor Butter 500g 299 ea Limited to 6 assorted Coca-Cola/ Sprite/Fanta/ Lift/L&P 1.5L 2 for 400 Limit 10 Heineken/Monteith’s 330ml 12 Pack Bottles 2199 pk Limited to 10 assorted Prices valid until 31 January 2016.
