stuff.co.nz Auckland wins praise for planning Auckland is hailed as a world leader in planning for major emergencies. The city’s Civil Defence Emergency Manage- ment Group Plan has been named best prepared in a study of 100 English speaking cities ranked on how realistic their plans were in the event of a civil emergency. Study author Canadian researcher Allan Bonner says it would be ‘‘catastrophic’’ if one of Auckland’s 50 volcanoes erupted, but its residents should take comfort in knowing authorities are well prepared. The urban planner and crisis manager praises the level of detail in Auckland’s plan in his new book Safer Cities of the Future. He noted many cities were unrealistic in their gauge of the economic cost, but Auckland’s plan calculated a 47 per cent hit to the city’sGDPand 14 per cent nationally if there was a severe disaster. But he notes that only about 7 per cent of Auck- land residents are prepared for an emergency. ‘‘For a city built in a volcanic field, this may seem alarmingly low but it’s the truth.’’ He says there’s room for improvement and future plans could include more direct language to make it easier to understand. Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emerg- ency Management director John Dragicevich is pleased with the feedback from one of the most ‘‘recognised and prestigious’’ consultants in the field. ‘‘It’s heartening to read that we’re on the right track. But we’re not treading water. We’re still swimming toward the island of success.’’ The new and improved 2016-2021 Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Plan is due to be released later this year. ❚ Feedback on the plan at shapeauckland.co.nz is open until April 18. FEBRUARY 9, 2016, RODNEY TIMES Kind-heartedmen help out Starship The blokes at the Evelyn Page Retirement Village in Orewa have been busy building toys to make life a little bit easier for sick children at Starship children’s hospital. Over the Christmas break, Men’s Shed stalwarts Murray Bamfield and Brian Wood, pictured with Starship’s Lindy Slater, received an order for eight new wooden toy hospitals to help out Starship staff. The toy hospitals – which come complete with helicopters on the roof – are used to show children how the hospital works. Murray says the shed was happy to help out over the quiet period. ‘‘We’re retired and we like to have things to do – so why not?’’ 7 Active Body and Active Brain You need both to keep up! Don’t let poor hearing tire you out and disrupt your ability to keep up with life. Struggling to hear tires your brain. This litter of kittens was found flea infested with a nasty eye infection. Two are doing well but themiddle one died. Gutter Kitties desperate Gutter Kitties cat rescue has a car wash fundraiser on February 20 with raffles and a sausage sizzle to desperately raise funds for vet bills. An outstanding bill to its Orewa vet is almost $5500, and it owes $2500 to Glenfield Vets. ‘‘As you can imagine, we are in a state of panic,’’ Gutter Kitties founder Danielle Howard says. ‘‘It is increasing quicker than we can keep up with due to the busy kitten season. ‘‘With 160 rescues currently in our care, a back- log of over 80 rescues waiting to come in and our bills jumping ahead more and more each day, we are desperate to get our vet bills down.’’ The rescue is also at full capacity and desperate for foster families. It is often heartbreaking work with kittens not surviving, Howard says. The car wash runs from 2pm to 6pm outside the Gutter Kitties op-shop at Unit 9, 667 Whangaparaoa Rd, Stanmore Bay, behind The Crows Nest, with 100 per cent of profits going to its rescues. ❚ Tickets cost $5 and the buyer can present them at The Crow’sNest for a special $5 beverage price.
