Garden art: Four award-winning Kumeu gardens will serve as galleries for more than 1000 artworks this weekend. Steve Hoskin is a big fan of surfing, recycling and the ocean s changing temperament. The talented Gulf Har- bour artist combines all three in his art -- paint- ing the ocean and surf onto his canvas -- an old surfboard. He rarely exhibits his work but Aucklanders have the chance to see and purchase Mr Hoskin s art at the Kumeu Art in the Gar- den event this weekend. Four award-winning gardens will serve as galleries for more than 1000 pieces of original artwork from 80 New Zealand artists. Supported by the New Zealand Art Guild, artwork will be on dis- play and available for purchase by event visitors. The event attracted more than 800 visitors last year and this time organisers are introducing live music or poetry readings at each garden. Event founder Gra- ham McIntyre is encour- aging visitors to bring a picnic lunch and settle in for a relaxing afternoon. This year we have also created a delicious lunchbox for two, com- prising great local pro- duce and beverages, he says. Visitors pre-order these and then just turn up on the day and enjoy a decadent afternoon in stunning surrounds, enjoying great food and local wine and being entertained by excellent musicians. New Zealand Art Guild manager Sophia Elise says the Kumeu Art in the Garden event is a great opportunity for artists to showcase their art in an unusual way. We are excited to have artists from all over New Zealand exhibiting at the event, from as far away as Christchurch, she says. A range of artworks will be on display, including sculpture, mosaic, jewellery, pho- tography, painting, sand art, textiles, ceramics, glass art, carving and body painting. Tickets for the two-day festival are $25, and $10 for children over five. Proceeds go to local charities, including the Kumeu Community Patrol, West Auckland Hospice and Volunteer Kumeu Fire. Visit www.kumeuart inthegarden.co.nz for more information or tickets. Garden Ramble The Kaiwaka/Manga- whai Plunket and Mangawhai Kindergar- ten Garden Ramble is on November 6 and 7.
