Young designer Liviu Tudoran has been imagining a city car created by those won- derful people who brought us the iPod, iPhone and iPad. DAVE MOORE is fas- cinated. Should Steve Jobs or teams of his clever acolytes tear their collec- tive imaginations away from iPhones and iPads and such, it would be interesting to see what they could do in the automotive sector. The concept of a MacIntosh motorcar or an Apple iAuto is a tan- talising thought, one that designer Liviu Tudoran has taken a few steps further with his iMove. It s a design study that many agree is a pretty good representation of the kind of thing that the Apple idea factory might come up with should it be given a brief involving a car. Twenty-year-old Tud- oran s design is a remarkable piece of work, probably initially executed on one of the usual products of the Apple people and it has all those touchy-feely elements we ve grown to admire about their hard- ware. Its soft-edged, button- cute shape is easy on the eye and delightfully engaging and would appear to be just the thing to have parked in the driveway of those who are already loyal users of the iBook, iPhone and iPad. This should be no sur- prise, as the project s notes say that the iMove concept is derived from research for a small city car with design elements inspired by the Apple Macintosh brand ident- ity and corporate style. Tudoran says the exterior of the iMove is designed to change colour and texture according to the user s mood, using photocromic techniques, an area Mazda has been working with for its Shinari con- cept we showed on these pages recently. His notes reveal that the iMove s roof would be covered in pyramidical glass receptors that are able to charge the vehicle s electronic dash- board. Being just an elec- tronic rendering, such niceties as actual details about the drivetrain, its source of energy and likely performance and emissions levels are absent. It could be surmised that the device could be used as an internal com- bustion car, or developed as a plug-in hybrid or pure electric vehicle using known current technology. However, in an ideal world, an Apple-prod- uced iMove would have solar-derived hydrogen- electric motive power, and would be skilfully updated every couple of years so that its followers would want another, slightly better model than the one just superseded. Sound familiar? However, I thought the space, shape and tex- ture of the iMove was worth showing anyway, whatever its method of propulsion. It just looks so nice!
