NEW Woodfired Pizza and Dining Room 3210613AA RodneySport EMAIL SPORTS NEWS TO: firstname.lastname@example.org Darren delights in unbeatable year Quad pro quo: Former Orewa College student Darren Emm won the 400cc class at the national ATV motocross championship in Tauranga. By MICHELE ONG A dislocated shoulder did not prevent an Orewa teenager winning for the fourth straight national event in a year. Darren Emm, a 19-year-old former Orewa College student, came first in the 400cc class at the national ATV championship in Tau- ranga during Labour Weekend. It's just been awe- some,'' he says. I've been racing for 13 years, and this is the first time I've come away first in the 400cc class in a national motocross event. It's also the first time this year where I've come first in every national event I've entered,'' he says. Darren won the first time at the speedway nationals in March, and later roared to success at both the North Island and South Island cham- pionships. Darren says he had a fantastic day at the Tau- ranga competition, and managed a first shot'' in every race. My fitness beat every- body else. Most of the other riders were quite beat by the second round but I kept up with the pace and managed to pull away. Things get a lot easier once you're right at the front,'' Darren says. He admits his shoulder, which he dislocated at work, posed a bit of a challenge dur- ing the competition and the rough race tracks made it a bit sore''. But you just have to push through it.'' Darren has been riding since he was six, and has always wanted to be number one. I've usually come in second or third and have more than 40 trophies now. But suddenly to be in such dominant form after 13 years of compet- ing -- it hasn't really quite sunk in,'' he says. Darren says it is chal- lenging to ride a quad bike because the rider has thrice the weight and twice the size'' of a two-wheeler. You've 160kg worth of bike for the 15 minutes of each race, to ride over seven races. It's pretty challenging but you get used to it,'' he says. Darren says his spon- sor, Lincoln Shaw, has offered to support him to ride in Australia early next year. Lincoln Shaw has helped me a lot,'' he says. He built my quad bike for me. I might go over to Australia for some events.'' IN BRIEF Family day The Sport Gulf Harbour Annual Family Fun day is this Sunday. SAM'S SUCCESS Sam Bonar Sam Bonar, 11, came second in the 100cc section of the national ATV championship, despite a broken gear box and a seat which flew out halfway during his race. ''Sam had to race five 10-minute races on Saturday, around 15 laps for each race. He broke his gear box in the last race but managed to still finish,'' mum Wendy says. In the last race on Sunday, the Kaukapakapa boy had enough points to keep him in second, but still had to finish. A decision was made for Sam to slowly ride the 15 laps because of his grinding gearbox. Sam had blisters and bruises by the end of race day.
