Targa devotee Leigh Hopper always seems to attract some saga on the Auckland to Wellington run. This year was no dif- ferent when the Orewa- based team blew an engine during pre- liminaries at Hampton Downs in their 969 Subaru. So we had to enter the spare 940 car which is a 100hp less, but still quick enough to give the leaders some pressure, Hopper says. Halfway through day one the car developed engine problems and was down to three cylinders. On the last leg of the day, trying to maintain fast times by main- taining high corner speed, we had a little off, he says. That s somewhat of an understatement with the Subaru down a bank near a farm fence. The team had to with- draw for the whole of day two to fix the engine problem and re-entered on day three. Unfortunately, there are severe time penalties for non-completion of any stage and this put us well down the placing for total time, Hopper says. We did, however, win one stage on the last day at Wellington. All in all a great week of adrenalin and camaraderie. Coast to coast race invites contestants Mountain bike: The switch from road cycles to mountain bikes at the Makerau Scout camp. Get ready for the annual Rodney coast to coast challenge on November 14.More than 400 people are expected this year to slog the 10 kilometres from the Muriwai Beach end of Rimmer Rd on the first leg of a gruelling coast to coast challenge. Then it s off through the forest and a switch to cycles for a 30km jaunt on State Highway 16 through Helensville to Kaukapakapa and to Makarau scout camp. The brave move on to a 24km mountain bike up the Makarau Valley to Tahekeroa Rd and Upper Waiwera. Then on to Noakes Hill, a right into Krippner Rd and a down- hill run to Puhoi. The kayak stage is 8km down the Puhoi River from the back of Puhoi park, finishing at Wenderholm Regional Park before a 150m sprint to the finish. Doesn t sound like much, but rubbery legs give way by the score as contestants get out of the kayaks. The event is organised by retailer Canoe and Kayak as a fundraiser for the Kaukapakapa Scouts. Canoe and Kayak is also home to the Yakity Yak Kayak Club, claim- ed to be the friendliest bunch of kayakers on frequent trips. Registration is from 7.15am at the beach end of Rimmer Rd with the first stage briefing at 9am. Security is available at all transition sites for those wanting to drop off bikes or kayaks before- hand. Entry fees: Individual $70, teams $60 a mem- ber, junior teams $50 per member, family teams, adults $60 and children $30. Late fees at the dis- cretion of the organiser could apply. Visit www.rcc.org for more information, safety rules, regulations and location maps. Call Graeme Hounsell on (09) 420-5322 for queries. Horses race cyclists in clubs' annual fundraiser Cycle versus horse: The annual fundraiser for the Redvale and Counties polocrosse clubs is on November 21. Redvale teams up with Counties polocrosse club on November 21 to host an equicycle chal- lenge -- man versus horse over 15 kilometres across Dairy Flat hills. Cyclists in the annual fundraiser have a shotgun start at 8.30am, while the horses begin in small groups at one minute intervals from 11.30am. For safety reasons all competitors will be timed. Imagine the night- mare of horses and cyclists scrambling from the start if they were all to leave at once, Redvale club member Kim Reiche says. We have also endeavoured to make the course safe and interesting yet chal- lenging. There are a number of up-and-down hills, river beds, forest and gravel road areas -- levelling the playing field between horse and man. The challenge is open to all ages and all levels with prizes for the fastest overall, fastest cyclist, fastest horse, youngest and oldest competitors, best dres- sed and more. Parking and regis- tration at Landfill Rd, Dairy Flat. Follow the signs. Cyclist briefing 8am, equestrian brief- ing 11am. Pre-regis- tration is necessary.
