Plenty of embers were at a Kumeu fire brigade 40th anniversary dinner. Embers is the name given to brigade past members who keep in touch after leaving ser- vice. Among the more than 100 members and past members and partners sharing memories at the dinner in the Kumeu fire station was its first fire chief Stan Hopkins of Orewa. Former firefighter Brian Bracey of Kumeu was master of ceremon- ies.All received 40th anni- versary commemorative medals. About 100 people also called during a public open day from 11am to 2pm the same day, and many youngsters were keen to see what fire- fighters do. A ladder truck from Avondale showed how firefighters can tackle multi-level fires, while fire trucks were avail- able for inspection and a demonstration showed how firefighters can open up cars to remove in- jured occupants. A sausage sizzle was held to raise funds for Christchurch firefighters affected by the earth- quake and aftershocks. New volunteers are sought by the brigade, which hoped to secure some from the open day. A fundraising poker run on November 21 starts at the Kaukapakapa fire station at 10am.
