On the eve of Air New Zealand Wine awards medal winners being announced, news comes of the winners at the International Aromatic Wine Competition in conjunction with the Canterbury A and P Show. Now in its eighth year, the aromatic wine com- petition is open to sauvignon blanc, ries- ling, pinot gris, ge- wurztraminer, viognier and other wine varieties made in an aromatic style from any inter- nationally recognised re- gion. This year the supreme winner was West Brook Marlborough Gewurz- traminer 2010. Not only did West Brook win the top accolade, they also won a gold medal for the 2009 vintage of their gewurztraminer wine. Although the grapes are sourced from Marl- borough, the wine is made at West Brook s Waimauku winery. Winemaker James Rowan says 2009 was the first time they had dabbled with the ge- wurztraminer grape, and the quality all comes down to the grower. The juice components were pretty damn good when they came into the winery, he says. I just threw yeast at it and a small portion -- 13 percent -- went into bar- rel. West Brook Marlbor- ough Gewurztraminer 2009 is the sweeter of the two. It s a heady wine with rose blossoms (the pink sweetheart rose Cecile Brunner comes to mind), Turkish delight, honeyed citrus and candied violets on the delicious lingering finish. West Brook Marlbor- ough Gewurztraminer 2010 has more Moroccan spices together with rose essence and lychee. Although fairly dry in style, it is rich and spicy with a tickle of ginger that adds a refreshing zing to the lasting finish. You can try these wines at the winery in Kumeu Wine Country. The cellar door price is $21.90 a bottle.
