Front, from left: Coach Jason Waters, Gregorio Nicolas, Tony Lum. Team bowls over Aussies The New Zealand Tenpin Bowling men's team have taken a strike at Aussie pride, winning the Walter Rachuig Tournament in Sydney. The team, which includes Brodie Hunt from Hatfields Beach, entered the inter-state tournament held in conjunction with the Australian Nationals. Brodie was named an All-Star, bowling the fourth best average score. The top five players of the event are named All-Stars. The win is one of the best results in the his- tory of the sport in New Zealand. The team bowled against nine other state teams over three days, with 18 games of intense competition. This year it came down to the last game, with New Zealand holding on to win gold for the first time. Brodie averaged over 214 pins during his 12 games, a personal best at international level. Brodie has been bowling for nine years and is ranked eighth in New Zealand. This is my best overall performance but I still feel like there is plenty of room for improvement,'' he says. -- Caralise Moore Rugby game for Gene Catch me: Wellsford All Black Rene Ranger on the run with No 12 Eli Atkins, a Waikato under-20/21 representative, marking. Photos: JENNY ATKINS Quiet moment: Jarrod Atkins signs the ball. A memorial rugby game was held in Tomarata for Gene Atkins. After the unveiling of a head- stone, family and friends headed for the Tomarata rugby grounds for a friendly game and to remember Gene on what would have been his 30th birth- day. The game, played in great heart, was no Saturday stroll in the park. All Black Rene Ranger and several top regional, club and age group players featured. Half the players are cousins, and great bursts of running rugby made it entertaining. Paddy Joe Atkins was hooker and captain of the home team on the day, the Pakuranga pre- miers. Gene died in January 2009 after being shot during a dis- pute with a friend in Redvale.
