Some of the co-operative's oils can be sampled on Sunday. By DELWYN DICKEY Here s a chance to get the good oil. An inaugural Rodney Olive Oil Festival on Sunday celebrates wins by local growers in the 2010 Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards, and offers foodies the chance to test their taste buds. Two hundred regis- tered growers produce extra virgin olive oil in the country. While New Zealand has big commercial growers with up to 50,000 trees, all Rodney olive producers are small to medium growers with a few hundred to a few thousand trees. Retired farmers David and Janet Pankerd at Toru Waiwai in Manga- whai were the clear winners in the district with a best in class award, two gold and three silver awards. Mangawhai had an- other winner in Divinity Olives with a gold and a silver. McGiven Valley at Coatesville won a gold, Rockhaven Estate at Dairy Flat a silver, and Ti Kouka Estate at Kaukapakapa a silver. The Matakana Co- operative, representing 14 growers around the Warkworth to Leigh area, gained two silvers. Not only will foodies get to taste some of these local winners, they ll be able to learn how to use premium olive oil products with tasting tips and recipes as well as enjoy an afternoon of live music, wine and food under the olive trees of Heron s Flight Winery, 49 Sharp Rd, Matakana, from 1pm. A cruisy night with the Coastguard A cruise with the Coast- guard to help familiarise Kiwis with popular Hau- raki Gulf anchorages includes Waiheke- Coromandel on Novem- ber 30 and Kawau- Mahurangi on December 7 Each cruise will out- line hazards and a num- ber of safe boating tips.
