Ten years ago, an article in the Rodney Times alerted readers to a new stop on the fledgling Matakana wine trail. Ascension Vineyard, with its stunning com- plex modelled on California's San Luis Obispo Mission, and the first winery in Matakana with a dedicated winery restaurant, was a huge boost to wine tourism in the area. Owners Darryl and Bridget Soljan bought their seven-hectare prop- erty in 1994, and as grapevines were planted a building was con- structed. But the young couple waited until they were ready before open- ing their restaurant and cellar door. They named it Ascen- sion to reflect the daily ascent from the winery into the hillside vineyard to tend the vines. Ascension Wine Estate, as it is now known, has gone from strength to strength. Its position on Matakana Rd, between Warkworth and Matakana Village, almost commands wine tourists to stop. What they find is an exciting range of wines. They'll also find a new range of wine labels, packed with personality and flare. We hope they will find the personality of the wine inside the bottle too,'' says Darryl, explaining that because almost all of their wines are sold at the winery the labelling has been refreshed to promote the wine variety rather than the brand. The Passion sauvignon blanc is full of passion- fruit flavours. The back label tells us Spanish missionaries named the fruit after arriving in South America. The Rogue is the flora, off-dry in style with juicy flavours of apple, pear and tropical fruit. The flora vines were orig- inally thought to be pinot gris. DNA testing proved otherwise. The Rosarian is a fresh, fruity and deliciously refreshing pink that's best served chilled. It's named for the gardeners who look after the roses at the end of the vines. The Vestal Virgin is the viognier, named because Ascension was the Matakana pioneer of this variety. The 2010, made from the best grapes Darryl has ever harvested, is rich and heady with a smooth oily texture and delicate apricot flavours. The Rotier is a sweet- styled semillon made from grapes that have been infected with noble rot.Ascension Wine Estate opens daily from 10am to 5pm and a small charge applies for wine tasting, refundable on purchase of wine.
