Kaipara got the perfect start, winning the toss and putting Onerahi into bat on a wicket that was always going to help the bowlers. It was just a case of Tazz Satti and Matthew Taylor keeping their line full and straight. They did this to perfec- tion and after a couple of overs the first wicket was down. From then on, it turned in to a pro- cession with Onerahi all out for 37. Matt Taylor took five for 25. A bit of attention from Arun Charles and Mike O'Flaherty saw the tar- get easily reached after 14 overs and the loss of two wickets. With that victory, Kaipara Flats now faces Whangarei City in the final on December 5. Their last meeting was abandoned because of bad weather. Kaipara meet the same rivals this weekend at the Cobham Oval in the continuation of the Mark Cromie Holden competition. Visit www.north cricket.co.nz for full results. First regatta for many sailors Young sailors from around Northland and Rodney competed in Optimist, P-Class, Starling and Laser classes at a Learn-to- Race regatta at Algies Bay last Sunday. The Sandspit Yacht Club centreboard div- ision hosted the event which attracted many sailors in their first regatta. Despite the blustery conditions there was a very good turnout with 13 sailors com- peting from Sandspit Yacht Club and 13 sailors representing a variety of clubs includ- ing Marsden Point, Whangerei, Darg- aville, Keri Keri and Kaikohe. The focus was on learning skills, meet- ing other sailors and having fun. The kids did excep- tionally well in try- ing conditions, with winds gusting from 15 to 27 knots,'' Sandspit Yacht Club coach John Morgan says. Three races were held and despite capsizes, submerged boats and decidedly hairy moments, the contestants all came in with big smiles and a positive first regatta experience. Thanks to the organising committee and regatta volun- teers. Sandspit Yacht Club centreboard div- ision holds coaching/ group sailing for Optimists and Star- lings every Tuesday from 4.30pm and Sunday from 9am. New and returning sailors are invited. The next formal block of lessons for new sailors starts Febru- ary 8. For more infor- mation call Christine on (09) 422-3477.
