IN BRIEF High-speed chase A stolen vehicle reached speeds of more than 140kmh during a police chase from Stanmore Bay to Helensville. Three men got into a locked silver Mitsubishi Galant on Shakespear Rd, Gulf Harbour, police say. They put $52 worth of fuel in at a Manly petrol station before driving off without paying. Within 10 minutes the car was stopped by police after speeding but as the officer got out of his vehicle the driver took off. He was pursued for about 45 minutes around the Helensville area before being road-spiked. The driver has been charged with unlawfully taking a vehicle, petrol theft, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. Victim named The man who died after an incident in Pine Valley Rd in Dairy Flat last week was Kris Reive, 24, of Hatfields Beach, police say. A post mortem examination has been completed and a police inquiry team was doing a forensic scene examination and speaking to his friends and associates. A 25-year-old man has been charged with common assault after the incident, and is on bail. 'Tis the season to enjoy PLAY BY RULES Cockle and pipi gathering is banned at Whangateau Harbour. Camping on the kiwi creche island of Motuora is popular, but as with all Hauraki Gulf islands administered by the Conservation Department it is off bounds to dogs. Hauturu/Little Barrier Island is off limits to all without a landing permit, but Tiri Tiri Island is easily reached by boat and the Tawharanui Regional Park open sanctuary by car. Kawau Island walks are always popular but the reserve at Mansion House is off limits to dogs. The Leigh Marine Reserve at Goat Island is a major attraction, so get in early. Tawharanui Marine Park has great snorkelling, as does Horseshoe Island in Whangateau Harbour. The Whangateau Fun Day is on January 22 with the Glass Bottom Boat from Leigh taking three trips out. The Experiencing Marine Reserves team will take small guided snorkelling trips. The Jane Gifford is moored at Warkworth most weekends, open 10am to 4pm. Christmas lights: Christmas lights at Matakana go on this Friday, signalling the start of a busy summer. NORTHERN communities will be buzzing again this summer with wine lovers, foodies, boaties and beach- goers all vying for the best spots around the area. But the big ticket New Year events at Matakana are not on this time. They include the Highlife NYE Experience at Matakana Country Park, which is taking a break, and Music Mountain Matakana. On December 3 the Mata- kana Village switches on its Christmas lights with the Matakana Primary School kapa haka group performing and carol singing from 5pm to 9pm. This will be the start of a regular Friday night twilight event featuring music, casual dining with local food, wine and beer in the village square. Most shops in the complex stay open until 7pm. The twi- light market continues until the end of January -- except for New Year s Eve. On Saturday an art and craft sale is at the Matakana Community Hall from 8.30am to 2.30pm. Admission is free. The Wellsford Farmers Market starts on December 4 at the historic Wellsford Rail- way Station from 8am to 2pm. It will take a break between Christmas and New Year, returning on January 8. Christmas parades are in full swing with Warkworth s on Saturday at 1pm, followed by Maungaturoto at 6pm. Helensville s parade is also the same day at noon. Kumeu s is December 10 at 7pm. A Christmas shopping weekend and book sale is at Point Wells Hall on Friday 5pm to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 2pm. A Christmas Concert by the Kowhai Singers on Saturday includes a mix of the traditional and new, Susan Hayday s Matakana School Children s Choir and soloists Susan Hayday and Beverley Hicks, at Mahurangi College Audi- torium, 7.30pm. The Waipu Market is on Saturday, 9am to 1pm, at the Coronation Hall, the same day as a Family Christmas Market at St Chads Church in Huapai at 4pm. Ascension Wine Estate in Matakana has a New Year s Eve dinner music and dance Extravaganza event with music by Manuel Gomez. Tickets $150 are limited. The Leigh Sawmill and Cafe has a New Year shindig for $60 featuring Cian, Man- ual Bundy and Submariner. The New Year starts with the Warkworth Rodeo on January 1 at the Warkworth Showgrounds at 10am.
