Organiser Ash Matuschka of Waimauku, left, with team member Andrew Lancaster gear up for the trip. Photo: JAKE DARWEN Lifeguards tackle the Kiwi coastline By CARALISE MOORE Six Muriwai lifeguards will push their inflatable rescue boat to its limits early next year. The crew is taking up the challenge to be the first to complete a cir- cumnavigation of New Zealand in an inflatable rescue boat, or IRB. Organiser Ash Matu- schka says it will be a chance for lifeguards, surf clubs and all New Zealanders to celebrate 100 years of surf life- saving. The lifeguards will undertake their voy- age in a series of 32 legs starting on January 5. The 40-day trip will cover 5200km of coast- line. The longest stretch will be from Fiordland, across Foveaux Strait, around Stewart Island to Bluff, one of the most isolated and difficult stretches of water in the world. At the end of each leg the crew will come to shore, landing at not only the country's most popular surf beaches, but at some of the most remote too. The team will need places to sleep during the trip, whether at the local surf club, on the couch or lounge floor, around the country. Leading the pack is Ash Matuschka who has been patrolling at Muriwai since 2000. Other lifeguards include Andrew Slim'' Lancaster, Jason Har- vey, Blake Ingram, Matt Buswell, and newest member, Christchurch's Antony Morgan. Ever since I read the story of the guys that attempted this journey originally, I've wanted to do something similar for surf life saving. This is the perfect opportunity for me to do that,'' Antony says. The team will also include a reserve driver, safety manager, media liaison, doctor and mech- anic. We will divide the drivers into three teams who will rotate two days on, one day off,'' Ash says. They will travel in the motorhome on their days off. Visit www.sixsurflife guards.org.nz.
