Photo: BEN WATSON OPERATION Text HEAL to 4740 to donate $3.00 The Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust Burns survivor Dave Walker got his Badwater Buckle after a gruelling run through Cali- fornia s Death Valley. But he is not stopping there. He was the only Kiwi who qualified for the Badwater Ultramarathon in July. He finished the 217km gutbuster in under 48 hours and earned himself the much coveted buckle of honour. Proceeds from his efforts went to the National Burn Centre at Middlemore Hos- pital. Now Dave s ready to raise some more cash by running 716km from New Plymouth to East Cape in early 2011. He s already got $20,000 in the bag and the money will go towards a specialised micro- scope needed for intricate surgical work on burns patients. The Rodney Times is fundraising for the same cause as a key backer of Proj- ect Heal -- a campaign initiated by the Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust. We are urging readers to help raise the $200,000 needed to purchase the high tech equipment. Dave knows all too well how the microscope will change lives. He was just a year old when a boiling jug spilled its contents over him. The inci- dent left him with scarring on his chest, neck and one hand. Sir William Manchester, who helped set up the National Burn Centre, treated him and Dave now wants to give something back. Living with the after- math of a burns injury can be difficult and Dave is keen to support any move that may assist with a victim s recov- ery. The intermediate school teacher always found it diffi- cult as a child to take his shirt off for swimming days because it exposed his scars. Hear what Dave has to say on our website at www.rodneytimes.co.nz. Donations can be made at the Rodney Times office, corner of Alice Ave and Florence Ave, Orewa, or any Mad Butcher outlet. You can post cheques made out to the Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust to: Operation Heal, Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust, Private Bag 92815, Penrose, Auckland 1642. A night to remember It is being billed as the premier event of the year -- and with good reason. The Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust will hold a corporate charity dinner at the Telstra- Clear Pacific Event Centre on December 3. Guest speaker Prime Minister John Key will be interviewed by broad- caster Paul Holmes during a night of glitz and glamour raising funds for the National Burn Centre. ''This is a wonderful opportunity to host your friends and clients at a memorable event that enables your guests to enjoy your hospitality and witness your generosity,'' trust chairman Sir Peter Leitch says. A table of 10 costs $1850 + GST or $185 + GST per person. Call Shandall on 531-5910 for more information or email shandall@mad butcher.co.nz.
