A cookbook for the gentleman Gentleman cook: Well I was at the time the cookbook was compiled, Mike O'Neill says, offering sales proceeds to Helensville Lions for community distribution. A nomadic life led Mike O Neill to produce a cookbook for blokes as a fundraiser for his Helensville Lions Club. More than 300 recipes feature in A Gentleman s Cookbook, offered for $20 by the Parakai resident with all profits going back to his community. What s with the title though? Well, the author was a gentleman at the time it was com- piled, Mike says. Moreover, everyone knows that gentlemen don t actually do any- thing, so it shows the recipes must be straight- forward and simple. Mike says the book came about through his nomadic existence with the air force . He wrote down his favourite dishes in the many countries he visi- ted. There s everything from Kofta curry balls and La Mancha stew to Hong Kong chicken, gin- ger and pear stuffed trout, and gypsy pie. There are no photos in the cookbook -- apart from the cover. They take up space and don t necessarily contribute to the recipe itself. Clearly a practical Christmas present for the man, or woman, of the house, Mike says. A couple of hundred copies have already sold -- Mike s well known around the Helensville and Parakai areas. Contact Mike through the Lions Club of Helensville, 113 Parkhurst Rd, Parakai.
