RodneySport EMAIL SPORTS NEWS TO: firstname.lastname@example.org Kaipara takes win Pretty stoked: The Kaipara Flats team pose after seeing off Whangarei City, giving them their second tournament win this season. Back row, from left: Stephen Dill, Tazz Satti, captain Jake Phillips, Brett Hood and Mark Dellow. Front row: Arun Charles, Kyran Dill, Ray Beamish, Dexter Buchanan, Mike O'Flaherty and Matt Taylor. The Kaipara Flats Cricket Club is celebrating victory in the Lion Red one-day compe- tition final. The team beat Whangarei City at Cob- ham Oval on Sunday. Asked to bat first on a nicely prepared wicket, openers Kyran Dill and Arun Charles did a great job seeing off the new ball in the challenging morning session. Brett Hood scored 55, and Tazz Satti 29, but the lower order struggled to make runs, and Kaipara were all out for a below par 185. Tazz Satti bowled Whangarei City's opener Bert Horner with an exceptional slower ball before Matt Taylor ripped the heart out of the top order with an impressive 4-33. With the required run rate sitting at six per over, Dexter Buchanan put the City batsmen out of their misery, taking four wickets for 30. The home side were all out for 113, giving Kaipara their second win this season. This Saturday sees Whangarei Boys High School travel to Kaipara Flats to play the fourth round of the Mark Cro- mie one-day competition. It's all downhill from here Adrenalin rush: Coatesville teenager Sophie Tyas will be competing this weekend in the downhill mountain bike finals at Dome Valley. By MICHELE ONG Two siblings will be part of a downhill mountain bike race final at Dome Valley this weekend. Coatesville teens Ben and Sophie Tyas will speed down the Dome's rough tracks in the final round of the Auckland Downhill Mountain Bike Club's five-race compe- tition. Sophie came third in Tauranga, third in Roto- rua and second in Napier in the women's open. Ben was eighth in Tau- ranga, 11th in Rotorua and 11th in Napier in the men's open. Both Ben and Sophie missed out on the Wel- lington race because of work and school commitments. Ben says race days have been pretty good, and he sees events like the Dome Valley down- hill as training for the national championships in January. I'm looking forward to the final race. I went there in the weekend for a bit of prac- tice and the track's the steepest on the circuit,'' the 19-year-old former Rangitoto College student says. Sophie, 15, also from Rangitoto College, found downhill mountain biking really hard when she first started three years ago but now loves everything about it -- especially the adrenalin and the fight to stay on the bike''. Sophiemarie Bethall of Kumeu will also be riding on the day. Practice day is Saturday from 9am to 4pm and race day Sunday afternoon after final practice sessions from 9am to 11am. The track is reached via Kraack Rd. Visit www.akdh.co.nz for information. Colleges stay in touch Mahurangi and Orewa colleges are among the top 58 school teams in the country in the three-day XBlades Sec- ondary Schools National Touch Cham- pionship in Palmerston North tomorrow.
