Habitat co-ordinator Jess Sanford, front, is looking forward to seeing local skaters demonstrate their skills. Skaters show off tricks By CARALISE MOORE Skaters have a chance to show their tricks at the Stanmore Bay Skate Park Competition. On December 18, Coast Youth Community trust's Habitat initiative hosts a serious skating competition. With support and sponsorship from businesses, the competition will have some excellent prizes lined up for skaters who compete in the under-12, under-16 and under-21 categories. Registrations are at 10am on the day, with the free competition open to anyone. A barbecue, drinks and bands will entertain visitors and skaters while they wait their turn. The event wraps up around 1.30pm with prizes. The Habitat programme is run weekly on Monday nights at the skate park to help create a posi- tive and safe environment for young people to hang out. As part of the Habitat pro- gramme we run a big event every term to help increase partici- pation and give some opportunities,'' Habitat co- ordinator and skater Jess Sanford says. We have done competitions before, but never this big.'' Auckland Council will be rep- resented with councillors coming to build relationships with youngsters. Businesses are supporting the competition and have supplied a range of prizes. These include Snowplanet, The Warehouse Whangaparaoa, ASB Whangaparaoa, Rotary Whanga- paraoa and Orewa, Red Bull, McEntee Hire and Total Inter- active. Jeremy Greenbrook-Held, 29, is the Labour Party's candidate for the Helensville electorate in next year's general election. The West Harbour resident grew up in Kaukapakapa and Helensville, attending Kaukapa- kapa School and Kaipara College. He is a manager in the tertiary education sector and was a Future West candidate for the Hender- son-Massey Local Board. List MP Darien Fenton was the previous Helensville Labour rep- resentative. The seat is held by Prime Minister John Key.
