Three-day Kaipara adventure Kaipara heights: A private three-day walk that climbs high into the Kaipara Hills is now on offer. Saltmarsh: The final day sees a walk along the edges of the biggest harbour in the southern hemisphere -- the Kaipara. By DELWYN DICKEY Wilderness walks are a great way to see parts of the country that are often inaccessible, with the Kai- para2Kaipara walk no exception. Much of the land on the walk is privately owned and usually not open to the public. Developed by local couples Clare and Steve Dill, and Jenny and Shane Hood, the three-day walk wends its way initially across farmland at Kaipara Flats before heading up into the rugged Kaipara Hills into native bush at Mt Auck- land/Atuanui. It then heads down on to the saltmarsh wetlands and forests on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour, a haven to migratory birds includ- ing threatened or endangered native species like the fernbird, marsh crake, Australasian bittern, banded rail, grey faced petrels, dot- terels and wrybill and the critically endangered fairy tern. Three nights of eco-friendly accommodation starts with a stay in the beautifully restored historic farm homestead at Glorit on State Highway 16 before being dropped off at the start of the walk at Kaipara Flats. A rustic farm hut surrounded by native bush on the Hoteo River affords a comfortable second night stay with a third in the carbon neu- tral, wind-powered Kaipara Views Eco-lodge in the Kaipara Hills. To book call (09) 945-0311 or email info@kaipara2 kaipara.co.nz. Website: www.kaipara2 kaipara.co.nz.
