Underground Skate s popular annual Orewa Skateboarders compe- tition drew top national skaters to the Orewa Skate Park on December 12.Local skateboarders took out many of the top prizes for their skills. The day was divided into three categories -- under- 12, under-16 and open. With local skate- boarders Mikey Wade as master of ceremonies, and Underground Skate Academy coaches Harris Taylor, Alan Keclick and Mark Hartshorne as judges, skaters needed to impress to take home the prizes. Around 35 competitors entered, with several national competitors coming from as far away as Tauranga to battle it out for more than $5000 in prizes. Organiser and Under- ground Skate owner Nick Humphreys says the day was a huge suc- cess. It was great to see many skaters say it s regarded as one of the best run, and most fun skate competitions in Auckland. The day kicked off with the under-12s. Connor Martin from Auckland was consistent throughout the compe- tition, landing every trick in his run and took first place. He was closely fol- lowed by Stanmore Bay s Evie Walker and Albany s Ollie Hudson. In the under-16s Arkles Bay s Chase Col- lins bagged a top run, ending with a gap to 50-50. Chase says it was a good day with tough competition. It was cloudy to start with so it was a bit quiet, but it picked up as the day went on. Other skaters were trying really hard so it made for a fight. I really enjoyed it. I was injured in the under-16s so couldn t compete in the opens, but I was pleased with the result, Chase says. Browns Bay skater Sean Bone placed second with Whangaparaoa s Josh Watts in third. The open competitors entertained the audience with a wide range of tricks. Devonport s Nick Mit- chell turned heads with a flawless run and tech- nical tricks placing first. Last year s winner Mike Bancroft from Albany pulled some top tricks but just couldn t top first place getter. He did however take best trick of the day with his kickflip indy, win- ning $250 cash. Third-place winner Brian Haycock from west Auckland placed third. Underground Skate would like to thank all the sponsors of the event.
