Thrills and spills on New Year's Day Wild rides: About 8000 people enjoyed the New Year's Day rodeo in 2010. Organisers expect a similar sized crowd in 2011. The rodeo returns to Warkworth on New Year's Day with plenty of action and fun for the whole family. Or try the steer ride. Start the new year off with a fun family day out at the Warkworth Rodeo. Each January 1, thou- sands gather at the Warkworth Show- grounds to watch top rodeo competitors bull- riding, bareback riding, bronc riding, barrell racing, steer wrestling, doing the rope and tie, and team roping. About 140 top rodeo competitors from around New Zealand and Aust- ralia will be battling it out and showing off their skills. There ll be a special steer ride for any locals wanting to give it a go. The best rider will win a trophy belt buckle. It s an affordable event -- take the family along for $30, or tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. At lunchtime there will be entertainment for the children, who ll get a chance to chase the sheep around in the arena and enjoy some sweet treats. Free parking, bar facilities, and plenty of food stalls are provided. The event s put on by the Warkworth Rodeo Club, and secretary Kri- sta Fletcher says this year s rodeo will be as good as ever. Last year about 8000 people came along and enjoyed the rodeo. We re expecting about the same number this year. It s a great day for all the family. The club is taking entries for the local bar- rel race, for girls and boys from the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Kaiwaka. To enter, phone Krista on (09) 425-8828.
