BE CUT OFF Tough time for pets Tough time: Bob Kerridge with his yorkshire terrier Merlin at the Probus Club of Hibiscus Coast end of year luncheon. This time of year is tough with hundreds of kittens, cats, dogs and other creatures needing care and homes. That's the message SPCA national president Bob Kerridge gave about 80 Probus Club of Hibis- cus Coast members and partners at their Decem- ber meeting. They had already responded. The Bridge Club foyer at Manly was filled with gifts of blankets, food and financial contributions from members and their families for transfer to the SPCA's Mangere cen- tre. Mr Kerridge outlined the pressure the SPCA comes under with 130 kittens and cats already dropped off for their care at Mangere -- as well as homeless dogs and other abandoned creatures. Finding homes for them all is a never-ending task with foster parents fill- ing the gaps until perma- nent arrangements could be made, he said. Inevi- tably, for some, there is not always a happy out- come. In a world becoming increasingly violent, cruelty to animals has also increased, Mr Kerridge said. Very often, the first violent act committed by a young- ster is to an animal and provides a useful indi- cator as to the likelihood of offending spreading to humans later in life. Mr Kerridge outlined the aspirations of a com- panion animal. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any sepa- ration from you will be painful for me. Remem- ber that before you adopt me. Don't be angry at me for long, and don't lock me up as a punishment. Talk to me sometimes. Even though I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when it's speaking to me. Be aware that however you treat me, I will not forget. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones of your hand, but that I choose not to bite you. Before you scold me for being unco-operative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I am not getting the right food, or l've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is get- ting old and weak. TakecareofmewhenI get old. You, too, will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys, especially the last one. Never say I can't bear to watch'. Everything is easier for me if you are there.
