By CARALISE MOORE Whangaparaoa's Charlie Smith is one special guy. The talented Special Olympics tenpin bowler has been selected to participate in the Special Olympics New Zealand 2011 Athlete Leader- ship Programme. Charlie has been active in Special Olympics for nearly three years, competing in tenpin bowling. He has also been involved with Blind Sport New Zealand for a year, breaking a 14-year record in shotput. The previous record was 1.1 metres, but I threw 1.93.'' Charlie has been named one of the Global Messenger Class of 2011. My brain is short circuiting, I am so excited. I want to make sure that every- one can have fun, that is one of my main goals in life.'' Special Olympics chief executive officer Kathy Gibson says Global Messengers are Special Olympics athletes who help spread the message and vision of the movement as well as the benefits they have gained by participating in Special Olympics. Twelve athletes from throughout New Zealand were selected for the programme. Charlie showed the selection panel how technology can be used to best advantage. Speaking right from the heart, he shared how import- ant it is for him to have more opportunity in the wider com- munity to share his story to encourage other athletes to strive to do their best,'' Mrs Gibson says. Charlie says he wants to inform the public about Special Olympics and the barriers to sport and rec- reation for those with impaire- ments. Global Messengers com- municate the powerful declarations of hope, accept- ance, dignity and courage of Special Olympics athletes around the world. The athletes learn skills to act as advocates and spokes- people in their community and around the country. They gain confidence to address functions and com- munity groups about intellec- tual disability, share their experiences, influence the community and policy makers on issues of concern to the intellectual disability com- munity, and respond around issues important to the intel- lectual disability community,'' Mrs Gibson says. Charlie says he is not scared of public speaking. I could speak in front of millions. Some people think having vision impairment means you can't have fun. But when you have great people around you, like I do in my life, it couldn't be better.'' Raffle helps good causes Christmas cheer: The Whangaparaoa Lions Club raised more than $1000 for local charities and worthy causes from their Christmas raffle drawn on December 18 at the Plaza. There were several lucky winners on the day, including shopper Claire Goad. At the draw are, from left: John Kingdon, Chris Doorman, president Alister McKinnon, raffle organiser Richard Fayerman and Jean Webber.
