Stunning views: Walk, mountain bike or horse ride on one of the farm trails on the 847 hectare farm at Atiu Creek on the Kaipara Harbour. Pristine beauty: Mahurangi East is accessible only by boat. stroll across the vast pasture and have a pic- nic at your leisure. There is no camping at Atiu Creek Regional Park yet but you can stay over- night at the Atiu Creek Farm Cottage. Dogs are not allowed. How to get there: Journey north on SH1 to Wellsford. Turn left at the Caltex station and service centre on to Port Albert Rd. Follow the signs to the park. The property lies on the Kaipara Harbour, on the Okahukura (Tapora) Peninsula. There is no vehicle access beyond the main carpark to Solomon's Bay. Refer to the park map for walking or mountain bike details on distance, direction and time. Mahurangi Scotts Point: Visit the Scott homestead to get an idea of Mahurangi's historic timber trade. Mahurangi Regional Park straddles the Mahurangi Harbour. You can drive to Mahurangi West and explore the park on foot or launch a kayak and head out onto the shel- tered harbour. Mahurangi West is a great place to picnic or stay overnight at Sullivan's Bay cam- pground. There is also camping at Te Muri Beach and Mita Bay, but with no vehicle access, you will have to carry all of your gear in on foot. Mita Bay, Cudlip Point and Te Muri Beach all offer scenic loop walks, between one and a half and three hours long. Check out the his- toric cemetery at Te Muri Beach along the way. Mahurangi Regional Park truly comes to life during regatta weekend in late January. Mahurangi East is accessible by boat and is where you will find Big Bay Bach and Vine Cot- tage, two quaint bach escapes. The last finger of Mahurangi Regional Park is Scott Point where you can visit the Scott homestead, a reminder of the Mahurangi Harbour's busy past as a hub of timber milling, ship building, firewood cut- ting and trade. Nestled in the hills are Bailey's and Ferguson baches. How to get to there: Mahurangi West. Drive north on SH1. About 6km past Wenderholm Regional Park, turn right into Mahurangi West Rd then right into Ngarewa Drive and fol- low to the end of the road. For Scott Point take SH1 to Warkworth and follow the signs to Snells Beach. About 1km past Snells Beach turn right into Ridge Rd and follow to the end of the road. Mahurangi East has no road access -- access is by boat only. Distance from Auck- land CBD -- 65km.
