From 10am to 4pm, top axemen from around the country will be com- peting in a variety of events. Organiser Dave Karam says the Puhoi Pub's the perfect setting for the event. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the woodchopping competition was held at the pub. You can come along and have a beer and watch the compe- tition on the pub's front lawn, which is a natural ampitheatre for the crowd.'' Events include stand- ing log, where competi- tors cut an upright log as if it were a tree, and underhand log where the log is cut while it is lying down. The doublehand saw takes two people who use the old cross-cut saws, while the jigger pole is where competitors climb up a 3.66 metre pole and cut a log on top. Then there is the axe throw where a double- headed axe is thrown at a bullseye target, and finally team races where the Puhoi Axemen will face off with visiting teams. About 1000 spectators came along last year to watch the woodchoppers battle it out for the title and the prize money and more are expected this year. There will be some- thing going on to keep you entertained all day. As well as the woodchopping there will also be live entertain- ment -- a Bohemian band in the afternoon and more live bands in the evening,'' Dave says. The pub's bistro kitchen will be open all day and into the evening so you won't go hungry, and the Puhoi Rural Fire Brigade will be running a sausage sizzle, he says. Sellers will be operat- ing stalls with somee of the Puhoi area's best wines, cheeses, and other products. The event is free. Sponsors include the Puhoi Pub and Hotel, Lothlorien Wines, Puhoi General Store, The Puhoi Stable Lawyer, Rhodes for Roads, Kinetik Designs, Mason Contractors, Amego Joseph, L.J.
