Simon Hassan of Kumeu has been named online financial news media FinancialAlert's Person of the Year for 2010. The award recognises a person in New Zealand who has made an outstanding contribution to the New Zealand financial planning profession. In a year during which the rub- ber hit the road in the regulation of New Zealand financial advisers, Mr Hassan has been a stalwart of the industry for decades, working tirelessly to lift professional standards. He is a very worthy member of the select group of now five Finan- cialAlert Persons of the Year,'' publisher Graham Rich says. For many years, he has been integral in the development of best prac- tice professional standards for advisers. In 2010, he has led the way, both personally as one of the first advisers to achieve Author- ised Financial Adviser (AFA) status in early December, and professionally, including consulting to government and the industry in the lead up to regu- lation. Also through his work with the international Financial Plan- ning Standards Board (FPSB), including his recent appointment to its global standards committee. And, he's capped off the year by being selected to be on the Financial Adviser Act Disciplin- ary Committee.'' Mr Hassan has run his financial advisory practice, Hassan and Associates, for many years. He is heavily involved in many professional associations and has worked as a member of the FPSB to develop guidance documents and education modules for use by educators and FPSB member organisations. He developed the professional component of the CFP certification programme. A CFP himself, Mr Hassan has for eight years lectured at Massey University, teaching a final paper for students completing the Dip- loma in Personal Financial Plan- ning. In addition to consulting to gov- ernment and industry in the lead up to regulation, including con- tributing to the standard set training courses, he began offer- ing his financial planning software tools for sale to other advisers, through a new business, finPRO. He is a member of the Institute of Directors, a Chartered Life Underwriter, a past president and a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Advisers and has penned numerous white papers and articles. As well as running a business, Simon has tirelessly, passion- ately, and enthusiastically con- tinued offering his knowledge as a professional financial adviser to others on all levels in this pro- fession,'' Deborah Carlyon, princi- pal of financial advisory firm Stu- art and Carlyon, says. Endeavour Financial Planning director Royden Shotter says: Simon is a tireless champion of good financial planning practices. He puts in an enormous amount of time behind the scenes, ensuring many of the things we take for granted work as they should.'' IFA president and Finan- cialAlert Person of the Year 2008 Nigel Tate says: Simon's passion for his profession is evident in all he does, whether it be assisting other practitioners get through the current assessment pro- gramme or developing his plan writing software for advisers. His opinion is sought from many com- mentators and is usually spot on in many areas.'' Mr Hassan admits he's a bit of a workaholic''. He hopes industry regulation will do as little damage as possible.
