Riverhead Junior Ath- letics Club achieved a record medal haul at the Auckland Junior Athletic Champs held at Mt Smart. The club sent 10 relay teams aged from seven to 13 years old to the event. About 15 clubs from the region attended and the standard was very high. Although a win wasn't recorded, Riverhead achieved its biggest medal haul ever at the championships with one silver and six bronze, plus six fourth placings. Club teams qualified for 17 of the 18 relays that had heats and finals. For many of the seven and eight-year-olds this was the first time they had run on a proper track in front of a lot of people. It can be quite daunting,'' club presi- dent Hattie de Vries says. But there were no dropped batons and trainers and parents can be very proud of the kids and their efforts on a successful day.'' It has been a good year for the club with Elena Chetland de Vries selec- ted for the Auckland team to face New South Wales in the annual Trans Tasman Challenge in Sydney this month. James Hickson, Reuben Brown, Jack and Tara Doherty-Eagles are heading down to Hast- ings for the North Island Colgate Games. Riverhead club nights resume on February 9 at 5.30pm at the Domain.
