Digging away: Orewa's Emily Muller, five, hopes to unearth a prize. Big Dig: Thousands are expected to attend on Sunday and organisers are hoping for good weather. Fun time: The under-fives dig starts at 10.30am and the over-fives at 11am. Sand relocation of a different sort is at Orewa Beach on Sunday. Orewa Lions host their annual Big Dig in front of the Orewa Surf Club from 9am. Organisers hope for good weather and expect up to 2000 people to attend. We ve had tremendous sup- port from lots of local sponsors and have plenty of prizes this year, Orewa Lions president Paul Reid says. There will also be the usual entertainment with bouncy castles, rides, icecream, and cof- fee on tap. Plus a sausage sizzle run by the Whangaparaoa Lions club, who also help us with the set-up and clean-up." Gary Brown, who has supported us in previous years, is our compere again, Mr Reid says. Children under five will get to dig first, with tickets going on sale about 9am. The dig usually starts about 10.30am. Over fives follow at 11am. There are displays by Hibis- cus Coast Bluelight and police, Coastguard and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. A few diggers will receive big prizes, like a new bike. Other prizes are to be confirmed. Orewa New World is the main sponsor. Most diggers receive a small prize, and at the end there ll be a prize draw, raffles and spot prizes. All money raised will be donated to local community charities. This year the club will support youth and elderly organisations, Mr Reid says.
