In what was expected to be a closely fought contest with neighbour- ing Orewa, hosts Red Beach scored a runaway victory to notch their seventh consecutive Owen Chapman title. In perfect weather and with a small surf to make things interesting for competitors, Red Beach finished with a winning margin of 81 points. About 335 competitors took part in the event which saw a record 32 surf boat crews and 22 canoe crews. The surf athletes came from 16 clubs across the North Island. Nine of the clubs were from the northern region and five from Bay of Plenty -- only northern region clubs are eligible to win the Owen Chapman Cup. There was also rep- resentatives from New Plymouth Old Boys, in Taranaki, Wellington's Titahi Bay, and South Brighton, Canterbury, to add spice to an event which has become New Zealand's third largest surf carnival after the New Zealand Champion- ships and the Northern Regional Champs. Missing from the event were 13 elite competitors from Orewa and Red Beach, who are with the 18-member northern region team in New South Wales for a three- test competition series. Owen Chapman Cup overall points. Red Beach 196 1, Orewa 115 2, Mairangi Bay 76 3, Muriwai 51 4, Kariaotahi 185,Piha146.
