By MICHELE ONG Security is tight in Ron Drinnan's vegetable gar- den where a scarecrow guards against feathered thieves. The 92-year-old Orewa resident says he spent years trying to find a way to stop pukeko from climbing over my fence and pulling beans out''. The scarecrow idea came to him one night. I made the scarecrow the minute I got up the next morning,'' Mr Drinnan says. I used a bit of bamboo and old clothing. Took me about two hours to make it.'' And it worked. Pukeko now have not made it past the tree stump'', he says. Some people think the scarecrow looks a bit like Mr Drinnan. He has also hung CDs and empty cans on a line running behind the scarecrow, as the light reflecting from the CDs and the din from the cans rattling also keep the pukeko away. He looks forward to a good harvest as a result. Mr Drinnan featured in the Rodney Times October 6, 2009, issue when he turned 90. Want to try golf croquet? You can try golf croquet at the 144th Warkworth AandPShowon Saturday. During the Kowhai Festival Warkworth teams of teachers, bankers, hairdressers, chemists, medics and firefighters played some lively games on the croquet lawns at Point Wells. This time it's at the Warkworth Show- grounds. An opportunity for young and old to try out a game of golf croquet is being set up by the Warkworth and Districts Croquet Club Players. They will show you how to hold a mallet and hit a ball, and then you'll be partnered with a club player for a 20-minute game against another beginner team. Bring a partner or come on your own. Wearing flat-soled shoes is advised.
