Advertising Feature Drive Weekend Shuttle back as stretched Jazz Honda's much-loved Shuttle nameplate is back in the form of an up to seven-seater ver- sion of Jazz, discovers DAVE MOORE. Honda's Shuttle wagon is to return as a stretched up to seven- seater version of the Jazz hatch. The original Shuttle which was based on the third generation Civic/ Ballade platform was introduced in late 1983 and enjoyed four years of assembly at Honda's CKD plant in Nelson. With all Hondas out- growing the size of the models that originally bore their nameplates, the Jazz-based Shuttle promises to be much larger than the old Civic- based original. However, it will use an engine of similar capacity to the first car to bear the name with a 1.5-litre unit expected for conven- tionally-powered models. An advantage in the use of the Jazz platform is that the Shuttle will also be made available as a 1.3-litre hybrid model and a plug-in pure elec- tric model, just as the donor hatchback is. Japanese sales of the new Shuttle commence in March, and Honda will have to think long and hard about its over- seas markets, as already after a raft of leaked photographs were seen and shared at the Detroit Auto Show, US pundits say such a vehicle would go down very well stateside, where the already established Jazz/ Fit range enjoys a loyal and expanding following. With no wagon this side of the Euro Accord, in the Honda range in New Zealand, it has to be said that the Shuttle would have a ready mar- ket here if it was able to be priced competitively. The original Shuttle was probably the first mini people-mover, coming as it did more than 15 years before Renault made the genre its own with the Scenic. The car's front and rear space was astonishing, thanks to its mildly high- rise design and it was something of an embar- rassment for Honda that its mid 80s Shuttles' rear legroom was in fact greater than that of the company's then-current luxury six-cylinder car, the Legend. The original car had other neat ideas, like underfloor stowage in the rear for bits and bobs and a slide out tray under the front seat, while its huge glass area provided a wonderfully light and airy cabin. In Jazz-based form with the donor-cars' famous underfloor space which is also used for fuel, stowage and battery-cell mounting, the latest Shuttle should enjoy a massive total load space with one or two rows of seats in use.
