Fairy Godmothers: From left, lead teachers Elizabeth Marriott, Berneece Tait, Gill Dempsey, Chris Benjamin and Deane Erasmus. In most fairy tales, a fairy godmother has magical powers and acts as a mentor to a child. The same can be said about the care educators who work for Fairy God- mothers Inc, the home- based childcare organis- ation covering Waiwera down to the Harbour Bridge. Fairy Godmothers Inc began in July 2006 and has built a good repu- tation in the area. It provides quality home based care services com- plementary to family life and is licensed by the Ministry of Education. Director Berneece Tait has many years experi- ence working in childcare and social work. FGI's goal is to cre- ate harmonious, stress- free homes where chil- dren can thrive. The organisation started in Berneece's liv- ing room when teachers and care educators got together and figured that between them they had the skills to run an organisation that supported local families and children, with no big overheads. For children the care educator is part of the extended family. It's like going to Aunty's for the day,'' says Berneece. And we only contract women we'd leave our own children with.'' Their fees are very reasonable and Berneece offers clear, practical advice about WINZ subsidies and govern- ment grants which can be complicated for parents. The ECE 20 free hours for three and four year olds really are free and if you have a low income nine free hours may be available to you. We go further than childcare, we can offer full family support,'' she says. Despite living in decile nine and 10 school zones, there are pockets of real need in the area. It's important to identify and help struggling fam- ilies early on.'' Fairy Godmothers Inc currently has 55 care educators and are look- ing for more on the North Shore where there is increasing demand for home-based care. All applicants undergo per- sonal, police, health and safety checks and are carefully selected then trained. Children in FGI care enjoy a warm, intimate home environment where their routines and personal needs dictate the daily programme -- not the other way round. FGI matches parents up with a suitable care educator but the parent has the final say on who looks after their child. The FGI care educators meet for playgroups, professional development and social events. The children also participate in com- munity activities like visits to the park, library time and music groups. An educational pro- gramme is planned for each child in response to their interests and capa- bilities with outcomes recorded in learning journals. This includes skill development in the areas of numeracy, liter- acy, music and movement. Interactive mat times with music and stories contribute towards preparing children for school. Lead teachers have fortnightly contact with care educators to ensure high standards of care and good teaching practices are maintained. FGI also offers an in- home parenting service to make parenting more peaceful and rewarding. Their staff are quali- fied and experienced in education, social work, rehabilitation and parenting. Importantly they have strong links with other community organisations and Gov- ernment agencies. Contact Fairy Godmothers Inc on 09-424-8868 or visit www.fgi.co.nz.
