Gabrielle Flower, 19, of Maunga- turoto is relishing the new chal- lenge of big city life. Two years ago she completed her level 3 catering certificate at North- Tec, while working at Killer Prawn on Bank St, Whangarei, Now she is at The Langham, Auckland, a five-star hotel in Symonds St. And she has already impressed its executive chef Volker Marecek, well-known from Master Chef New Zealand for running a tight ship. He says she has fitted in well to an environment not only very differ- ent to what she is used to, but succeeding in a much larger role while working with up to 35 staff. Mr Marecek is so impressed he has Gabrielle heading up the salad kitchen in the hotel s new $2 million concept restaurant Eight, which opened just before Christmas. Eight can serve more than 100 people at a time and offers cuisine from eight different world kitchens. Diners are taken on a culinary journey through each dining desti- nation as they create a menu of their choice. Gabrielle is in charge of the Gar- den Route kitchen and manages this with ease, Mr Maracek says. Working alongside a range of diverse kitchens and chefs means Gabrielle can also observe everyone else s talents. Their signature dishes are tikka raviz, googley korma, a scallop, chilli and garlic entree, mango chicken or a special handi chicken. The popular restaurant is busy from Monday to Wednesday as they offer delicious $10 dinner specials, and $10 lunches from Monday to Friday. They also have a special children s menu, and all children eat free on Sundays. As soon as you step inside you re greeted by friendly staff. Guests can have a drink or snack in the lounge bar or opt for a proper dinner in the restaurant. The roomy restaurant seats 140 people upstairs, downstairs or on the outside patio. A fantastic lounge bar is located on the mezzanine floor and if you have a group of six or more it s advisable to book in advance. It is ideal for events and special occasions as 70 people can easily be catered for. There is a wall- mounted projector screen perfect for business dinners or family/ movie nights, etc. All bookings are free.
