Shoulder straps should be wide, padded and adjustable. They shouldn't be worn too low on the shoulders or on one shoulder alone. The school bag's size should be adjusted to the child's size. The width should be no larger than the child's shoulders, and no longer than above the top of the child's hips. If walking long dis- tances waist straps help keep the bag close to the spine and distribute weight over the hips. Pack heavy and flat items so they are closest to the child's back and make sure they can't move around. The weight of the bag and its con- tents should be no more than 10 percent of the child's weight. Parents should keep an eye on their children's posture when wearing school bags. If they're leaning forward the bag is too heavy, poorly fitted or badly packed. Warm welcome promised French connection: Anne and Thierry Mazer of Spine Centre - Orewa Chiropractic Clinic enjoy the local lifestyle. French couple Thierry and Anne Mazer are the faces behind Spine Cen- tre - Orewa Chiropractic Clinic on Tamariki Ave, Orewa. The couple took over the well-established chiropractic practice on Tamariki Ave in June 2010. Many of their patients are locals who have been with the clinic for more than 25 years. As soon as you walk into the modern clinic you are made to feel wel- come, and the Mazers bring a refreshing European professional- ism to what they do. Chiropractic care focuses on the relation- ship between the spine and the nervous system. If a patient experiences back, lower back, neck, hip and shoulder prob- lems they should consult Thierry or Anne, who are experts in all aspects of spine related disorders and rehabilitation. If left these issues can lead to consequences on the nervous system, cause painful headaches, sciatica or pins and needles. The couple are both internationally trained chiropractors who work in the clinic together but have different areas of expertise. Their patients range from newborns to 90 year olds. Thierry has a post graduate qualification from Sydney's Macquarie University specialising in nervous systems. He has more than 20 years experience as a chiro- practor, including time as a lecturer in Paris. In Europe he also trained in physiotherapy. In France Anne worked in a multidisci- plinary centre special- ising in pregnancy care. She sees a lot of babies, female and preg- nant patients. She can check babies' spines soon after delivery and is dedicated to assisting pregnant women in a tactful way. At their Tamariki Avenue clinic they are joined by practice man- ager Julie and massage therapist Roger. Both are long-time Hibiscus Coast residents. We strive to go beyond the limits of a traditional practice and offer comprehensive treatments,'' says Thierry. Roger has recently joined us, as massage can be an important part of a person's rehabilitation.'' They have recently acquired a new Spine- Force machine from Europe, the second one in New Zealand. The machine helps re- educate the deep muscles of the spine ensuring speedier recovery times, increasing strength and flexibility of the core. The couple live in Arkles Bay with their two young sons who attend Whangaparaoa Primary School. After living in places like Syd- ney and Queenstown they enjoy the lifestyle the area has to offer. It is the perfect place for what we want in life at the moment and for the rest of our lives,'' Anne says. And not too far from Auckland.'' While working here we have met around 35 different nationalities,'' Thierry says. We enjoy chatting about a person's background and getting to know the local com- munity.'' Spine Centre - Orewa Chiropractic Clinic is at Tamariki House, 7 Tamariki Ave, Orewa. Book with Julie on 09 426-4545, email thierry@spinecentrenz .co.nz, or visit www.spine centrenz.co.nz for more information. Thierry and Anne are members of the NZ Chiropractors Asso- ciation and ACC registered.
