They are one of the many families who will benefit from the new portable ultrasound machine at Starship. Clinical director of Starship radiology Sally Vogel is excited about the new device. Photo: SARAH MOYES By SARAH MOYES At five weeks old, Danielle Loader s jaun- dice still hadn t gone away. I thought the doctors were just going to send her for some sun- bathing, mum Helen Bailie says. After a number of tests, including many ultrasounds, the 10- month-old was diagnosed with a serious liver con- dition, as well as hepa- titis. She is now waiting for a liver transplant to replace her deteriorating liver, and is mostly feed through a tube. The Starship Foun- dation has just been given a brand new port- able ultrasound machine to help diagnose and monitor children like Danielle. Clinical director of Starship radiology Sally Vogel says ultrasounds are used a lot with chil- dren. Unlike a lot of other procedures, they are non-invasive, painless and have no radiation. These machines will be used on children from all over New Zealand. Barfoot & Thompson donated the device, which costs $196,000. Local branches around Auckland raised close to $60,000 to go towards the purchase through community events like raffles, swim-a-thons and quiz nights. This is going to be a huge benefit for sick kids in the hospital, Dr Vogel says. The fact that the ultrasound machine is portable means it can easily be wheeled to the bedside of a sick young patient. Starship has only two other ultrasounds, one of which is outdated. This will effectively give us two good machines. Starship Foundation chief executive Brad Clark says this sort of thing is what the foun- dation is all about. This is a key part of keeping these little ones alive. He says it s a privilege to help launch the new device for his first gig as the foundation s chief executive. This will keep the hospital at that world- class level that it s at.
