Photo: JAMIE TROUGHTON Chris Moors of Red Beach took advan- tage of a dropping Mt Maunganui swell to claim the ironman title at the Northern Region surf lifesaving cham- pionships on Sunday. With the final remnants of Cyclone Wilma pouring a gentle half-metre wave onto the beach, the 26-year-old cleared out from a quality field, show- ing the benefits of basing himself on the Gold Coast for the past nine months. Moors was ninth at the iconic Coolangatta Gold long distance race in Australia earlier in the season and admitted the base fitness from that event is still aiding him. He headed home Hamish Beattie of Westshore, and Glenn Anderson of New Plymouth Old Boys, with an effort that helped his club into third place overall on 78 points. Hosts Mt Maunganui pipped defending champions Papamoa by a solitary point, 91 to 90, with Mount's victory aided by an ironwoman win from Johanna O'Connor. Red Beach, bolstered by Moors, won the open men's board relay, the board rescue and taplin relay in a strong dis- play. Mairangi Bay teenager Danielle McKenzie showed her potential by winning the open women's board race and helping her club win the board relay. Duathlon runners return Warming up: REAL duathlon runners warm up before last year's run. The event returns to Orewa on Sunday. A Whangaparaoa woman with a son who has recently been diagnosed with autism is running in the REAL women's duathlon on his behalf and fundraising for Autism Awareness. Fourteen members of a boot camp team are also doing the duathlon as one of their challenges. These are just some of the reasons hundreds of women will be lining up for a fifth season of the duathlon at Orewa on Sunday. The duathlons are non- competitive and aim to get women of all ages, cultures and fitness levels enjoying outdoor exercise together. The REAL series has attracted more than 30,000 entries during the past four years. Many women return each year to repeat the experience and we've developed such an atmosphere of friendship that we now call it the REAL spirit,'' event director Jane Patterson says. The Health Sponsorship Council is the principal partner of the series with an emphasis on healthy eating and wellbeing for women and their families, a theme that reinforces the REAL motto of Regular Exercise, Active Lives. The series is being held at nine venues nationwide over three months. It started at Mt Maunganui on January 31 -- although the swim was cancelled in the new triathlon alongside the duathlon because of huge seas -- and finishes at Ambury Regional Park in Auckland on April 17. A five-kilometre walk/run also features on February 27 alongside the duathlon at Ambury Regional Park. Visit www.realduathlon.co.nz for more information.
