Resurfaced courts in time for open day Fresh grass: Getting the feel of the new court surface at the Orewa Tennis Club are, from left: Senior player Kay Churches, senior captain Jason Ward, coach Rebecca Weber and club president Grant Weber. Three artificial grass courts at the Orewa Ten- nis Club, resurfaced for about $66,000, will be back in action in time for Saturday s open day at the club. Work started just after New Year when the old synthetic turf was torn up, small areas of the bitumen base were patched and new drains laid, club president Grant Weber says. The refurbished courts will also have new net posts. We re very grateful to the ASB Community Trust which gave us $46,000 towards the project, Mr Weber says. The rest of the cost came from club funds. He says the club got good use out of the old surface which had lasted for more than 10 years. Replacement is usually needed between seven and 10 years. About four years ago the club resurfaced its other three courts. Tucked away in a cor- ner of Victor Eaves Park, off Florence Ave, Orewa Tennis Club has about 200 active members -- juniors, seniors and veterans. But they are always happy to have more and hope that Saturday s open day between 1pm and 3pm, will bring in some fresh faces. Young duo excell Pint-sized champs: Wainui's Caitlin Lally and her pony Prima Bella put on a great show at last month's championships in Feilding. Eleven-year-old Caitlin Lally of Wainui and Prima Bella were crowned Dressage NZ Young Rider Pony Champions, level one, at last month s Pelorus Trust Championships in Feilding. Caitlin and her 13- hand pony, who won three of their four tests, also won the Dressage NZ newcomer award. The Wainui Pony Club and Dressage Waitemata rider and Prima Bella are newcomers to this discipline but set a high standard from the start. The combination won their first test by a wide margin and con- tinued to lead through- out the two-day event, which attracted riders from throughout the country.
