Dog lovers may recall horror stories of dogs lost overboard, or yachts that sink with the owners saved but no sign of the dog. Later, the dog may be found exhausted, wandering a beach after swimming for kilome- tres. Now owners can buy their pet a lifejacket. Dogs take little adjusting to the jackets and enjoy the extra buoy- ancy, Sandy Urwin of The Animal Health Cen- tre in Orewa says. Buoy- ancy foam is positioned within the vest to keep the dog in a natural swimming position at all times. Dogs can be hard to see when in the sea as their heads are lower in the water. The bright yellow colouring and high visibility piping make the dog s position really stand out in the waves, Sandy says. AnIDtagcanbe fastened to the vest or tucked away in the zip pocket storage sewn into the vest. Lifejacket costs from $57. They are available from the centre or the Orewa Beach Boulevard Festival Day.
