Dressed up: Sisters Nikki and Megan Cook with their dogs Eva and Hugo in their costumes for the best dressed competition. Treat time: Janine Stokes of North Auckland Dog Rescue with Baron who is treated to some pick and mix dog treats by chef Liz from K9 Doggy Deli. Dogs take centrestage at day Pooches of all shapes and sizes turned out for an Animal Awareness Day at Western Reserve in Orewa on Saturday. Visitors were treated to dog displays, pony rides, competitions, bouncy castles and market stalls. The day raised more than $2000 which will be split between North Auckland Dog Rescue and Gutter Kitties cat rescue, and their animals for adoption received considerable interest from potential owners. Bounding border, below: Brooke the border collie sails over the high jump during an obstacle course demonstration. Hopeful hounds: From left, Briar, Berry, Baron and Jack from North Auckland Dog Rescue were hoping their ‘adopt me’ coats would help them find new homes. Little lion: Chihuahua Teddy chose a lion costume for the best dressed competition and he brought ringmaster Sophie Ross along too. Winning smile: Ginger the greyhound, Jo Monaghan and the Greyhounds as Pets team won the prize for best dressed with their Hawaiian theme. Hot seat: Two-and-a-half-year-old Lenah Haidara takes time away from the animals to check out aNewZealand Fire Service truck. Barking on: Jem the retired working dog shows you’re never to old to hit the obstacle course for a bit of health and fitness.
