www.rodneytimes.co.nz NEWS Spotlight on Rodney By RANI TIMOTI Here’s a chance to help shape your future at the first Rodney in the Spotlight Expos. One is at the Kumeu Showgrounds on February 15, followed by another at the Mahurangi College Hall in Warkworth on March 1, both from 10am to 4pm. Residents and business people can meet Rodney Local Board members and Auckland Council staff. The board wants feedback on its plan to create a strategic vision for the area and set priorities for at least the next three years. Costs and time frames for key projects, including public swimming facilities in north Rodney, a community hub in the Helensville Service Centre and boat launching and mooring facilities are among the topics. The concept of sharing information and educating each other about the district’s projects and objectives is exciting, Mrs Steele says its import- ant for people to have input into the Rodney Local Board Plan. ‘‘It moves forward and keeps us on track with our community directions – we can’t go off on a tangent.’’ The creation of a super- board chairwoman Brenda Steele says. ‘‘Rodney residents, who are mainly rural, relate better face-to-face than on a phone/computer conversation.’’ city has been hard for some people to get their heads around, Mrs Steele says. ‘‘Especially residents used to having regular contact with familiar council staff under the old ward system. ‘‘We want to improve and give our community the security and feel they’ve got direction. The goal is to Guilty plea to murder By IAN STEWARD A Warkworth man has pleaded guilty to murdering his ex-partner by beating her to death with a rock two days before Christmas. Jasmine Cooper, 27, was killed at her Te Hana home on December 23, 2013, by her ex-partner Gene Hapana. Hapana, 40, pleaded guilty to mur- der in the High Court at Auckland last Wednesday. The court was told that the pair had been in a relationship for about a year before Cooper’s death. They lived together on Coronation St, Te Hana, near Warkworth, until they separated after Hapana tried to strangle Cooper. He was trespassed from the prop- erty but in the weeks before her death, Hepana called and texted Cooper almost daily. On the night of the murder, Hepana was drinking at his sister’s house in Warkworth. At 1am he asked his father for a ride to Cooper’s house. He met the woman at her house and spoke to her briefly before leaving and walking around Te Hana for a while. He returned to the house and Coo- per saw him outside. Hepana grabbed Cooper and strangled her into submission, a police summary of facts says. He picked up a large rock and dragged her to a spot beside the house. Police said Hepana strangled Coo- per into unconsciousness then beat her about the head and face until she was dead. Justice Timothy Brewer remanded Hepana in custody to sentencing on March 18.
